Review: My Stubborn Heart by Becky Wade

It has been a long time since I have read a whole book in a day. It's been a really long time since I've read a book I just couldn't put down, that gripped me from the start, that kept me turning the page, even when I had laundry to do and supper to cook. My Stubborn Heart by Becky Wade was that book for me this past weekend.

Wade's debut Christian novel tells the story of Kate Donovan, a single woman who travels to Redbud, Pennsylvania with her grandmother to orchestrate the renovation of the family homestead. Matt Jarreau is the man hired renovate the house, and he has baggage. Lots of baggage. Matt is an ex-hockey player who can't get over the death of his wife. It is only through Kate's stubborn persistence that he begins to open up and feel again.

It is difficult to explain how much this book affected me...stayed with me. The pain and hurt in Matt's heart was palatable and I could feel Kate's empathy and growing love for him. There were moments when I would find myself holding my breath, listening for Kate's words of encouragement, waiting to hear Matt's heart speak, anticipating the moment when the two would connect on an emotional and spiritual level.

Secondary characters played a big role in the book and made for some comic relief. It reminded me of the movie Return to Me, with a group of seniors hanging out with the young couple, having fun, being merry, and being a HOOT! Loved these seniors!

The romantic tension between Kate and Matt was FABULOUS (yes, there were definitely some swoon moments!) and they were paced in a satisfying way. Seriously, this was a romantic book. Well done. Satisfying in every way.

I have to tell you, the characters stayed with me for quite awhile. I think it was because the author did such a great job in getting into the character's mind and heart, going deep, delving into the dark parts. She didn't just tell about their inner selves, she showed it in every gesture, thought, action, glance. It was brilliant.

Normally, I do a giveaway with my book reviews, but I am keeping this one. It's too good to give up. I'm sorry! But you can go HERE to purchase it! I highly recommend it!

ABOUT MY STUBBORN HEART:

Kate Donovan is burned out on work, worn down by her dating relationships, and in need of an adventure.  When her grandmother asks Kate to accompany her to Redbud, Pennsylvania, to restore the grand old house she grew up in, Kate jumps at the chance.
Yet, she discovers a different type of project upon meeting the man hired to renovate the house.  He’s attractive and clearly wounded -- hiding from people, from God, and from his past.  Kate can’t help but set her stubborn heart on bringing him out of the dark and back into the light... whether he likes it or not.

Vacation Day = Craft Day

I took the day off work yesterday and boy, did I have fun! I made it a Craft Day and had some fun with spray paint. So today, I thought I'd share what I did.

First, I saw the cutest thing on Pinterest. (click on the Pinterest link for a tutorial...you will need to click again on the picture in pinterest to take you to the tutorial) You save up jars, like pasta sauce jars, pickle jars, etc., clean then up, then spray paint the lids. You get cute knobs from Hobby Lobby, then attach them to your lid. Fill the jar up with something fun, and you have an inexpensive gift! Here is what I made:

And look at all the cute knobs I got at Hobby Lobby! They were having a 50% off sale, so I stocked up. They were only about $2 a knob. This is what I am doing for Christmas gifts this year!

Next, I had a mirror that was just kinda blah. It was a grey stone looking mirror that I really didn't like anymore. So, I decided to paint it.
I think it turned out fabulous!!!!! Then I put it in the living room and rearranged a bit.
Then I didn't like the look and decided to spray paint the little table black. How do you like my little Titus, sitting so nicely for his picture? Here it is again with the table black. (with Titus not sitting still this time)

I like it better. It pops now.

My daughter is moving into an apartment in August and some friends gave us an old end table. So I pulled out another paint can and spayed away. It looks cute, doesn't it?
How's that for a before and after? I'm pleased, and I hope my daughter will be too!

So that was my day of crafting. I had to take some aspirin last night because my hand was aching so bad from all that spraying! lol...the joys of aging are increasing.

Happy Friday! Do you have big plans for the weekend?

Sherrinda's Fabulous Weekend

My husband was out of town this weekend and I had some fun. Of course, if he had been in town, he would have come with me...it's not like I was doing things I wasn't supposed to! Friday night I went to my in-law's house over in Dallas, where a bunch of family gathered for a little birthday celebration. Delicious food, lots of laughter, and I got to hold Piper Kate, the newest addition to the Ketchersid clan. (I believe that makes 45? now...from my husband's parents to the great-grandchildren.) I don't have a picture me and her, but here is her precious self.

Saturday I went to the grand opening of Trader Joe's. It is the first one to open in Texas and my son got a job there. So I went and was shocked by the crowd. I had to park three blocks away and police were directing traffic. Craziness. Here is a picture of my son checking out. He is far away, since I am in line...which is backed up into the aisle. EVERY line was backed up almost to the opposite end of the store. To shop in the aisles you had to reach across people standing in line to check out. CRAZY!
My son is the super tall guy with the navy shirt on.
Then I went home and took a nap and watched some Alias episodes. I then went with my friend to Saxby's Coffee House to listen to her husband and his friend play and sing. Soooo good! They sing 60's and 70's music and they are fabulous. It was an hour trip to get there, but it was worth it. Lots of laughter with my friend and some yummy frappichinos!

Sunday I drove to Granbury, which takes about an hour, and went to church with my mom and dad for Father's Day. We went out to eat for lunch and had great pasta, then went to their house to visit for awhile. I have the best parent's in the world. So funny, so wise, so cool. I love being with them.
My mom and dad...the best!
And today, I go back to work. Here I am in my work environment...well, I'm not really my desk, since we are displaced because of remodeling. There are four of us secretaries with laptops, sitting at a small conference table. I'm soooo glad we really like each other. I tend to get goofy to ease the chaos of the closeness. Good times!

So are you ready for another week? Anything special happening?

Copyright Issues

Bloggers need to be aware of copyright issues. In fact, you need to be very careful. I've learned the hard way. I've found pictures mainly by googling the topic I'm writing about and then looking at the image search. Well, I found out that is the wrong thing to do. I've been contacted by the artist of a picture that I used and if I can't get it to quit showing in Google's cache image search by today, I will be added to a list of people this person is taking legal action against.

Last Friday, I deleted the photo in the post, as well as in another post from my group blog. I've deleted the photo on my hard drive and downloads. I have deleted the photo in Google+ cache and in Picasa Albums (all google products linked to blogger) I have even sent Google a request to remove the photo from their image search. But I don't know that it will be done by today.

Since this happened, I went through all my photos in my blogs, hard drive, Picasa, Google, etc and deleted ALL photos that I do not have rights to. I am trying to do what is right.

All this has got me thinking, what about Pinterest? What about You Tube? If it is not legal to use other people's pictures, then how do these sites keep track of the legalities? I don't get it.

Another thing that is bugging me. As I was researching how to get that photo completely deleted, I realized how interconnected things are. Blogger is connected to Google, and Picasa, and Google+. I had no idea Google+ kept a cache of all the pictures I use in my blog posts that I post in Google+. It's crazy. And it makes me just a bit reticent to blog.

Anyway, just wanted to share what I've been learning....the hard way.

p.s. The picture is no longer showing up! Thank goodness!

Summer Hours

Cocoon hammock!!!
Summer has officially begun in our house. My son is out of school and tomorrow I begin summer hours. I have to be at work at 7:30 a.m. and stay until 5 p.m. I get half an hour for lunch. The cool thing is I get Fridays off in the summer. Nice, huh?

Summer has a different feel. There is a relaxed attitude that permeates my life during summer. I tend to watch movies more. Watch TV series more. Read more. Act lazy more....gasp...that is really hard to believe.

The problem with that is, I need to write more. With an extra day at home, I need to get motivated to put my fingers to the keyboard and let my story burst forth. I wanted to have this novel finished by the end of the summer, but unless I put my behind in the chair and do it, well, it ain't gonna happen like I want it to.

How do you get motivated? How do you push yourself to do something that you KNOW you will enjoy doing once you get back in the groove?
